WHO, 2025 Autism – also referred to as autism spectrum disorder – is a diverse group of conditions related to brain development. In 2021, approximately 1 in 127 people had autism. The characteristics can be detected in early childhood, but autism is often diagnosed much later. The abilities and needs of autistic individuals vary and can evolve over time. While some individuals with autism can live independently, others have severe disabilities and require lifelong care and support.
